A little taster…

Seeing Earth from seventy miles up filled me with an emotion I hadn’t anticipated. The nuclear blast decades ago left half the globe in a blood-red shroud. The misery and ruin that ground the most vulnerable among us to dust drove Sunk to craft a new world – a simulacrum of Old Earth sealed beneath the towering glass dome of Mars Colony.

Sunk’s latest technology cut the travel time exponentially, but still, I was stuck cooling my heels at the space station for a few days while we transferred orbits. I used the time to study the updated briefs.

Sunk’s memo was alarming. Six months ago, one of his top scientists, Reginald Tolen, was discovered at his lab in a pool of blood, the body face down, pants around his ankles. When the lab assistant turned him over, he received the shock of his life. Tolen’s penis and testicles had been ripped from his body.

I winced at the accompanying full-color, high-def images he’d uploaded to my personal HoloSphere.

An internal investigation came up cold. The following week, there was another victim. Killed in the same manner. Then another. Surveillance systems had been scrambled. Whoever was behind the attacks was an insider, a member of the Mars Colony elite, someone with access to all the security codes.
